Why it matters how it’s hung

A room changes one layer at a time

Paint colors a wall. Wallpaper gives it a voice — a botanical that turns a small bedroom into a garden, a fine stripe that makes a low ceiling feel taller, a deep mural that makes the dining room the place everyone lingers.

But wallpaper is only as good as the wall underneath it and the care that goes into hanging it. A seam that opens after a humid summer, a pattern that drifts off level by the third strip, a corner that starts to lift — those usually come from rushed preparation or a careless hang, not from the paper itself.

So we think about every project, from one accent wall to a whole floor, in three layers.

Layer one

The wall

Holes filled, cracks and loose paint dealt with, rough texture smoothed where needed, and the right primer applied, so the paper has a sound, even surface to grip.

Layer two

The paper

Non-woven, traditional, vinyl, grasscloth, peel-and-stick or a panel mural: each handles differently and calls for the right adhesive and technique for the room it’s going into.

Layer three

The hang

A plumb first strip, a pattern matched across every seam, clean cuts at ceilings, trim and outlets, and a final check in good light before we call it done.

On a mural, the horizon and the tree line have to meet cleanly on both sides of an inside corner — a detail you notice immediately when it’s wrong.
Craft

The details that decide the finish

Good wallpaper work is mostly invisible. You shouldn’t be able to find the seams, and the pattern should read as one continuous surface from the doorway.

  • Plumb from the first stripWalls and corners are rarely perfectly straight, so we set a true vertical line rather than trusting the corner. Every strip after it follows that line.
  • Pattern matched, not approximatedStraight-match, half-drop and random-match papers each hang differently. We plan where the pattern lands at eye level and where the last, unavoidable mismatch can hide.
  • Tight, flat seamsEdges butted closely and smoothed without stretching the paper or squeezing out too much adhesive.
  • Clean cuts around everythingCeilings, baseboards, window and door casings, switches and outlets trimmed with sharp blades for crisp lines.
  • The right timingMany papers need to relax (“book”) after pasting before they’re hung. We follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each product.

Ideas for your rooms

Not sure what your space could carry? A few directions people often consider — and what each one asks of the installation.

Painterly mural of leafy trees and birds covering a full wall
Painterly murals. Large scenes add real depth to a plain wall, and depend on every panel lining up exactly.
Small room with dark botanical wallpaper above white wainscoting
Big patterns, small rooms. Above wainscoting, a dark botanical feels rich rather than heavy.
Bathroom wall covered in a willow and heron print next to a glass shower
Bathrooms, done right. Choose a moisture-tolerant material and adhesive, and make sure the room is well ventilated.

Let’s talk

Have a wallpaper idea? Give us a call and tell us about the room.

You don’t need measurements or a product picked out to start. Describe the space in your own words and ask what’s possible. If it would help, ask whether an on-site look at the walls or measurements can be arranged for your project.

Quick answers

Before you call

Do I need to choose my wallpaper before I get in touch?

No. Plenty of people call with nothing more than a room and a feeling they want it to have. We can talk through which types of wallcovering suit that room — how it’s used, how much moisture it sees, what condition the walls are in — so you can shop with a clearer idea of what will work.

Can you hang wallpaper I’ve already bought?

Usually, yes. Let us know the brand or product and roughly how many rolls you have. It’s worth checking that all the rolls share the same batch (or lot) number, because colors can vary slightly between print runs, and that you have enough to allow for the pattern repeat.

How long does a wallpaper installation take?

It depends on the size of the space, how much preparation the walls need, whether old paper has to come off first, and the material itself — a single accent wall is a very different job from a stairwell or a full mural. Once we understand your project, we can give you a realistic idea of timing.
